Most dogs show the first signs of tartar by the age of 3. How do you recognise it, and what can you do about it?
Tartar is one of the most common problems in dogs. It is estimated that up to 80% of dogs over 3 years old have some degree of periodontal disease. Even so, many owners overlook it, because the animal doesn't complain of pain.
How to recognise tartar
- Brown or yellow deposits on the teeth, especially at the gum line
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- Red or swollen gums
- Refusing hard food or toys
