Vaccinating an adult dog — which vaccines are mandatory and which are recommended
The vaccination protocol for adult dogs differs from that for puppies. We advise what not to neglect, and why.
Vaccination is a basic pillar of preventive care. Many owners vaccinate their puppies diligently but then forget the booster doses in adulthood. Yet immunity after vaccination lasts only a certain time and declines without a booster.
Mandatory vaccination
In Slovakia, dogs are required by law to be vaccinated against rabies — once a year or once every 3 years, depending on the vaccine used.
Recommended vaccines
- The combination vaccine (distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis, leptospirosis) — once a year or once every 3 years depending on the protocol
- Kennel cough (Bordetella + parainfluenza) — recommended for dogs in contact with other dogs (shows, boarding, training classes)
- Leishmaniasis — for dogs travelling to southern Europe
